DM3's
first live performance was in Dom Mariani's home town of Perth,
Western Australia, in 1992. But their story really begins a full
decade beforehand, with the most seminal rock band to emerge from
the world's most isolated capital: THE STEMS.
From 1984 to 1987 THE STEMS (with Mariani at
the helm as singer, songwriter and lead guitarist) steadily
infiltrated Australian radio, press and alternative charts,
winning the hearts of critics and a legion of loyal fans through
electrifying live performances. A succession of classic singles
and a chart-topping LP, At First Sight, stirred interest as far
afield as Europe, Japan and the USA. Then THE STEMS disappeared,
sealing their legend for all time.
An obsessive dabbler in extracurricular
projects (Stonefish, the Sunner Suns, Five Alive, Orange), Dom
Mariani had already begun an association with The Lime Spiders'
Daryl Mather which would soon culminate in the first and only
Someloves LP. Something or Other (regarded as one of the great
underrated albums of the time) won the duo a landslide of
accolades and a clean sweep of the 1990 WA Music Industry
Awards--including the first of many songwriting awards in
Mariani's name.
DM3's debut single, "Foolish" saw Dom
back with an award-winning song and on Australian stages with
another loud, tight, electric rock 'n' roll beast. Their first LP,
One Time Two Times Three Red Light (1993) sold throughout
Australia, Europe, Scandinavia, Japan and the USA; earned a number
one position in the Finnish album charts, and was followed by a
European tour covering Spain, Germany, France, Italy and Denmark's
world-reknowned Roskilde Festival. Now honed down to a no-frills
trip with bassist Toni Italiano and drummer Pascal Bartolone, DM3
presented their second LP, Road to Rome, the most refined and
confident project of Dom Mariani's long and loud career.
Since then DM3 has released the 5 Greasy Pieces
CDEP, and released an album of outtakes and B-sides, Garage Sale,
on Citadel Records.
